Kurashiki Cycling Cultural Tour with a Local Guide
With a guide, we will stroll through the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Area, which still looks as it did 400 years ago, and while unraveling its history and culture, we will cycle up the Kurashiki River to the Sakazu Water Distribution Pond. The Kurashiki River used to be a canal-like river, with a wide channel and takase-boats coming and going. Today, part of the channel is culverted and flows underground. We will show you materials that reflect those days and give you a sense of the past and present. It is about 3 km to the destination, the Sakazu Water Distribution Pond, and during the tour, you will see many places of interest, such as a former entertainment district, a place that shows Kurashiki as a transportation hub, and a former spinning factory. At the Sakazu water distribution pond, we will take a break at a nearby café, and then go to the Sakazu kiln, where potter Okamoto will explain the connection between Sakazu pottery and the river. We will then return the way we came and finish the tour.

I love to travel both alone and with multiple people. Naturally, when I have a camera, I get more images of landscapes and friends, but one day I notice that I have very few photos of myself. I think most camera enthusiasts are naturally divided in that way, but it is still a bit lonely, so I thought it would be nice if there was someone who could take pictures of me instead. Also, it is difficult to ask a passerby to take a picture of you at a tourist spot, isn't it? I am a shy person myself, so I understand exactly how you feel. It's nice to have someone you can ask to take your picture without hesitation! Nowadays, people are taking pictures with their smartphones in hand to post on social networking sites. The performance of smartphone cameras has evolved tremendously, but a picture taken with a single-lens reflex camera is still very different. In this service, the photographer basically does not intervene in the conversation of the customer. We take pictures of you enjoying your trip in a natural way. However, if requested, we will be happy to discuss photo shooting locations and provide travel advice, so please do not hesitate to ask us. We look forward to meeting you. ▼About the photo shoot One photographer will be on location for the shoot. The equipment used is the minimum necessary for a one-person operation. Special Ikebana experience guided by an ikebana master, Mrs. Inao, in Kurashiki with over 60 years of ikebana experience. (with an English guide)(2h)
Why not try ikebana at a class in Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter with flowers associated with Okayama Pref.? The English guide interpreter will explain the history and spirit of ikebana at a flower store that has been loved by the locals for 70 years. After that, you will be able to choose one type of flower for yourself. (Other flower materials will be prepared by the flower store, taking into consideration the balance of the flowers.) You will travel from the flower store to the classroom through the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter. A teacher from Ikenobo, Japan's oldest school of Ikebana, who has been arranging flowers for 65 years, will teach you everything from techniques to etiquette. This tour is not just a hands-on experience, but also a springboard to a deeper understanding of Ikebana and Japanese culture. The spirit of ikebana is rooted in the idea of giving life back to life by arranging flowers that had once been cut off by plucking. If flower arrangement is an aesthetic of addition, ikebana is an aesthetic of subtraction. In ikebana, the nagative space between the flowers and plants to be arranged is important. Let's try to deepen your understanding of the Japanese people's love of nature and the culture that has been passed down from generation to generation through ikebana experience!!

Tour of the Kurashiki Museum of Folkcraft by the owner of a long-established folk crafts store that has been running for over 50 years with a nationally-licensed guide (3h)
Welcome to the world of "Mingei". The tour will be led by Mr. Yamamoto, the owner of "Toru Mingei Shop," a long-established folk craft store for over 50 years, and will tour the Kurashiki Museum of Folkcraft while receiving explanations in English translation. Hear an explanation of the Kurashiki Museum of Folkcraft, which usually has few explanatory notes or explanations, from the perspective of the guide, Mr. Yamamoto. Folk crafts are " products that ordinary people need in their daily lives," or in other words, "crafts of the people, by the people, and for the people. (Website of the Japan Folk Crafts Association) Yanagi Muneyoshi, the father of the folk craft movement, called the daily utensils produced by nameless craftsmen "mingei" (folk crafts). He advocated a new value of beauty, saying that folk crafts rooted in daily life have a "wholesome beauty" that is in accordance with their utility. By learning about the relationship between folk crafts in Japan and Kurashiki, what folk crafts are in the first place, and the history and attractive aspects of folk crafts, visitors will deepen their understanding of and attachment to folk crafts. By learning more about folk crafts, each participant may have the opportunity to develop a deeper love for his/her own region. Let's think about what is a rich life in these days of mass production and commonplace things by learning about the activities of Mr. Yanagi and his colleagues. The exhibits at the Kurashiki Museum of Folkcraft do not have written explanations. Usually, this tour is left to the imagination of the participants, with explanations by the guide, and you can ask questions. This is a precious opportunity to learn more about folk crafts.
